Letter from the Editors

The idea for this journal started with a few half-hearted jokes and a vision we never really thought we’d have the means to make real. But as time went on, we began to notice just how little space there is within the EGGS community for writers who want to share their creativity—yet have no platform to do so. That realisation pushed us to take this project seriously. We know firsthand how hard it can be to take those first few leaps of courage, to put yourself and your writing out into the world of competitions and critique.

Ultimately, while the writers featured in each issue of 1023 Magazine have been selected from a pool of submissions, we understand that writing is deeply subjective. We’ve taken time to work collaboratively and choose pieces that reflect the diversity and complexity within our school’s writing community. As young writers ourselves, the editorial process was a daunting challenge, yet in so many ways it was also rewarding. Reading each piece made us feel like we were building a connection—writer to writer, student to student.

In many ways, this journal has surprised us, and we have no doubt it will continue to. The quality and honesty of the writing, the courage behind the pieces, the sense that something was waiting to be said—it all reminded us why stories matter in the first place. Because they connect us. They challenge us. They remind us we’re not alone.

1023 Magazine isn’t just the result of our work—it’s the product of a community that values expression, risk-taking, and voice. So while we’re grateful to all those who supported the editorial team behind the scenes, the biggest thank you goes to everyone who submitted, shared, and believed. You’ve helped us create something we hope will keep evolving, issue after issue.

Here’s to the start of something new—something we hope will continue long beyond the year this journal was founded.
