The 1023 A literary Journal

About

The 1023 Magazine is proudly run by a dedicated and highly successful team of senior EGGS Deputy Writing Leaders, whose collective experience and enthusiasm guide the publication's editorial process. Each writing leader brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, with members from our team having been selected for prestigious national journals and writing awards.

Mission

Our mission at the 1023 Magazine is simple yet profound: to create a space where young writers can express their creativity and connect with readers and other literary communities. At the 1023, we believe in the power of storytelling and the importance of fostering the next generation of writers. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just beginning your literary journey, we are here to amplify your voice and share your stories.

The Team Behind It

Anushka Dissanayake
Founder - She / Her

Having been the previous winner of the national 2023 Poetry Aotearoa Yearbook Student competition winner and being published in several nationally recognised journals such as Starling, Symposia and Re-draft, the hope is that my previous experience will help guide other aspiring writers towards finding themselves in their own writing and leading them towards success beyond school.

Maayan Bialik
She / Her

I am a passionate reader and writer. I love experimenting with my writing and seeing how far people's imaginations can take them. I've competed in many essay and speech competitions and I've recently been getting more into prose and poetry as well.

Catherine Warman
She / Her

Hello! My name is Catherine. My favourite things to write are short stories, and I like to read anything that doesn't have romance. One of my short stories was published in Re-Draft 2024.

Maia Hecker
She / Her

My name is Maia Hecker, and I am one of your writing leaders for 2025! I took the writing for publication course in 2024 and enjoy writing all types of fiction. I spend most of my free time reading, writing or doing archery.

Esther Polavarapu
She / Her

I'm Esther, I'm super passionate about all things writing, creative writing, essay writing and prose.

Eeshal Kashif
She / Her

My name is Eeshal, writing has been a constant in my life, a way for me to express myself and give importance to matters through written word. A lot of my work is melancholic and dramatic. My writing is a range of both fiction and nonfiction traversing contemporary themes.

Aleona Kudryashova
She / Her

Interested in all arts, I've always been writing in one way or another. My comfortable styles are essay and speech writing, but since having joined Writing for Publication last year, I've begun branching out more towards poetry and creative writing.
